The Cen­ter for Humans & Machines (CHM) con­ducts inter­dis­cip­lin­ary sci­ence to under­stand, anti­cip­ate, and shape major dis­rup­tions from digital media and Arti­fi­cial Intel­li­gence to the way we think, learn, work, play, cooper­ate and gov­ern. Our goal is to under­stand how machines are shap­ing human soci­ety today and how they may con­tinue to shape it in the future. The Cen­ter is com­prised of an inter­dis­cip­lin­ary, inter­na­tional and diverse group of schol­ars, and a sci­ence sup­port team.

To com­ple­ment this team, we are look­ing for a motiv­ated Stu­dent Research Assist­ant that helps us to under­stand bet­ter how AI can influ­ence human beha­vior. In par­tic­u­lar we are inter­ested in the human imit­a­tion of algorithmic beha­vior and cul­tural arti­facts. In close col­lab­or­a­tion with research­ers of the cen­ter, you will develop and adapt gen­er­at­ive machine learn­ing mod­els which we then intend to use in exper­i­ments includ­ing human par­ti­cipants. Depend­ing on your per­sonal interest and skills, the work could also involve, exper­i­mental design, data col­lec­tion, and stat­ist­ical ana­lysis.

Your respons­ib­il­it­ies

• Develop and adopt gen­er­at­ive machine learn­ing mod­els (python)
• Exam­ine quant­it­at­ive and qual­it­at­ive model per­form­ance
• Deploy mod­els in our in-house cluster
• Pro­cess, clean, and veri­fy­ing the integ­rity of data used for ana­lysis
• Use stat­ist­ical meth­ods and regres­sions to identify and quantify treat­ment effects
• Identify, cat­egor­ize, and sum­mar­ize rel­ev­ant lit­er­at­ure
• Dis­cuss and present your own work to a team of researcher

Your pro­file

• Enrolled in a Mas­ter's pro­gram at a Ger­man uni­versity in the fields of social sci­ence, nat­ural sci­ences, com­puter sci­ence, or related
• Exper­i­ence in pro­gram­ming in python
• Exper­i­ence with data mod­el­ing and model eval­u­ation
• First exper­i­ence with deep learn­ing (Tensor­flow, Pyt­orch)
• First exper­i­ence with data pro­cessing, stat­ist­ical meth­ods and data visu­al­iz­a­tion (R or python)
• Exper­i­ence with gen­er­at­ive neural net­works, such as GANs or lan­guage mod­els is a plus
• Good Eng­lish skills
• Inde­pend­ent and care­ful work
• Interest in beha­vior stud­ies on human-AI inter­ac­tion

• An inter­est­ing and var­ied pos­i­tion at an inter­na­tional research insti­tute at the fore­front of AI and Human inter­ac­tions research
