At the Helm­holtz Insti­tute Freiberg for Resource Tech­no­logy (HIF), innov­at­ive tech­no­lo­gies for the cir­cu­lare­conomy are developed to provide and use min­eral and metal-bear­ing raw­ma­ter­i­als more effi­ciently and to recycle them in an envir­on­ment­ally friendly way.

The insti­tute invites applic­a­tions for two pos­i­tions for junior research­ers (f/m/d) to develop a metal­lo­gen­etic model for the East­ern Erzge­birge in Ger­many.

The advert­ised pos­i­tions are both suit­able either for PhD stu­dents (f/m/d) or junior postdoc­toral research­ers (f/m/d), and will be avail­able from 1 Octo­ber 2022. Each employ­ment con­tract is lim­ited for two years. Place of work is Freiberg.

Two pos­i­tions for junior research­ers (f/m/d) to develop a metal­lo­gen­etic model for the East­ern Erzge­birge in Ger­many


Working field:

Scope of this pro­ject:
  • Devel­op­ing a new metal­lo­genic model for the form­a­tion of mag­matic-hydro­thermal Li-Sn-W and Ag-Pb-Zn greisen, skarn and vein min­er­al­iz­a­tion in the East­ern por­tion of the Erzge­birge region
  • Acquis­i­tion of new struc­tural and geo­chem­ical data
  • Meth­od­o­lo­gical approach includes field work, struc­tural ana­lyses, pet­ro­graphy, fluid inclu­sion work as well as geo­chrono­logy
  • Integ­ra­tion of new data with the res­ults of recent research as well as his­toric data
  • Research is car­ried out in close col­lab­or­a­tion with explor­a­tion com­pan­ies in the area, as well as the Geo­lo­gical Sur­vey of Sax­ony

Your tasks at pos­i­tion Struc­tural Geo­logy:
  • Crit­ical eval­u­ation of struc­tural data and con­cepts avail­able from the East­ern Erzge­birge region
  • Col­lec­tion of struc­tural data from avail­able expos­ures and ori­ented drill core in and around known ore depos­its in the study region
  • Selec­tion of samples suit­able to char­ac­ter­ize and date rel­ev­ant struc­tural events
  • Geo­chrono­lo­gical stud­ies
  • Data eval­u­ation and integ­ra­tion
  • Con­tri­bu­tion to a revised metal­lo­gen­etic model for the East­ern Erzge­birge

Your tasks at pos­i­tion Geo­chem­istry:
  • Crit­ical eval­u­ation and com­pil­a­tion of data and con­cepts avail­able for the physi­co­chem­ical pro­cesses of ore form­a­tion for the East­ern Erzge­birge
  • Selec­tion of samples of his­toric col­lec­tions and recent drill core mater­ial, focus­ing on occur­rences and depos­its in the East­ern Erzge­birge that have not been con­sidered in recent stud­ies
  • Sample char­ac­ter­iz­a­tion by a com­bin­a­tion of dif­fer­ent meth­ods, includ­ing: optical micro­scopy, XRD, µ-XRF,MLA/QEM­S­can, micro ther­mo­metry, Raman spec­tro­scopy, EPMA and LA-ICP-MS, with the goal to con­strain the physi­co­chem­ical con­di­tions of ore form­a­tion
  • Data eval­u­ation and integ­ra­tion
  • Con­tri­bu­tion to a revised metal­lo­gen­etic model for the East­ern Erzge­birge


PhD stu­dent (f/m/d):
  • MSc degree in Earth Sci­ences; a MSc degree in Eco­nomic Geo­logy will be an advant­age

Postdoc­toral researcher (f/m/d):
  • PhD degree in Earth Sci­ences with rel­ev­ant expert­ise in mag­matic hydro­thermal min­eral sys­tems

  • Exper­i­ence in rel­ev­ant ana­lyt­ical meth­ods
  • Will­ing­ness and phys­ical fit­ness to do field­work
  • Driver's license
  • Strong motiv­a­tion to work in a col­lab­or­at­ive research envir­on­ment
  • Excel­lent com­mu­nic­a­tion skills in Eng­lish in a pro­fes­sional con­text (present­a­tion of research res­ults at sci­entific meet­ings, writ­ing of manuscripts, dis­cus­sions with col­leagues)
