Die Mis­sion des Leib­niz-Zen­trums für Agrar­land­schafts­for­schung (ZALF) e. V. als natio­nal und inter­na­tio­nal agie­ren­des For­schungs­zen­trum ist es, an der öko­no­misch, öko­lo­gisch und sozial nach­hal­ti­gen Land­wirt­schaft der Zukunft zu for­schen – gemein­sam mit Akteu­ren aus der Wis­sen­schaft, Poli­tik und Pra­xis. Das ZALF ist Mit­glied der Leib­niz-Gemein­schaft und unter­hält neben dem Haupt­stand­ort in Mün­che­berg (ca. 35 Minu­ten mit der Regio­nal­bahn von Ber­lin-Lich­ten­berg) eine For­schungs­sta­tion mit wei­te­ren Stand­or­ten in Dede­low sowie Pau­li­nen­aue.

Research asso­ci­ate “Spa­tial Biod­iversity Data and ESS mod­el­ling”(f/m/d)

We are offer­ing a part time pos­i­tion (50%) from the 01.Feb­ru­ary 2023 till 30.11.2026 at our cam­pus in Müncheberg as Research asso­ci­ate (f/m/d)

Working field:

The pro­ject Mar­ginUp! (EU-Hori­zon CP6) aims at the devel­op­ment and intro­duc­tion of new land use options for mar­gin­al­ised and low-pro­ductiv­ity land which are cli­mate-resi­li­ent and biod­iversity-friendly and base on non-food crops for sus­tain­able indus­trial feed­stock. The EU wide con­sor­tia is going to identi­fy­ing prac­tices that secure land use and return prof­it­ab­il­ity on aban­doned/mar­ginal lands is crit­ical for com­bat­ing soil scarcity and con­trib­ut­ing to European policies such as the European Green Deal, Cir­cu­lar Eco­nomy action plan, and Bioeconomy and Biod­iversity strategies. Research activ­it­ies include the imple­ment­a­tion of new land­use sys­tems at 5 case stud­ies across Europe and 3 inter­na­tional col­lab­or­at­ive part­ners out­side EU. Within the Pro­ject ZALF is lead­ing one work pack­ages which focuses at the mon­it­or­ing, assess­ment and optim­iz­a­tion of biod­iversity and eco­sys­tem ser­vices impacts of the pro­posed new land use options for mar­ginal land based on data from the use cases. This work will be based on expert assess­ments and impact assess­ment meth­od­o­lo­gies.

  • review­ing exist­ing data on Biod­iversity /ESS on mar­ginal land across Europe
  • devel­op­ment of a GIS plat­form/frame­work for hand­ling Biotope/ Biod­iversity data for 5 use cases all over Europe
  • devel­op­ment of a GIS based ESS assess­ment tool related to pre­defined biod­iversity driven ESS (nature con­ser­va­tion, pol­lin­a­tion, self-reg­u­la­tion, etc.); data col­lec­tion via ques­tion­naires with regional part­ners/stake­hold­ers
  • report­ing recom­mend­a­tions for the fur­ther optim­iz­a­tion of crop­ping sys­tems for indus­trial crops on mar­ginal land regard­ing ESS sup­ply and spa­tial arrange­ment
  • present­a­tion of research find­ings on national/inter­na­tional con­fer­ences and pub­lic­a­tion in peer-reviewed journ­als

Requirements:

  • Mas­ter (MSc) in Envir­on­mental Sci­ences, or related fields
  • strong GIS skills, cre­at­ing simple GIS based spa­tial assess­ment mod­els
  • know­ledge in Eco­sys­tem ser­vices assess­ments/ assess­ment tools
  • strong organ­iz­a­tional and com­mu­nic­at­ive skills and sense of respons­ib­il­ity
  • exper­i­ence in present­ing research find­ings on con­fer­ences and in sci­entific pub­lic­a­tions
  • good com­mand of the Eng­lish lan­guage (spoken and writ­ten)
  • abil­ity to work in an inter­na­tional team
