Leib­niz-Zen­trum für Agrar­land­schafts­for­schung e.V. - HR

The Leib­niz Centre for Agri­cul­tural Land­scape Research (ZALF) is a nation­ally and inter­na­tion­ally renowned research centre with a mis­sion to explore inter­re­la­tion­ships in agri­cul­tural land­scapes and to provide soci­ety with the know­ledge base for a sus­tain­able use of agri­cul­tural land­scapes through excel­lent research. ZALF is a mem­ber of the Leib­niz Asso­ci­ation. It is loc­ated in Müncheberg (approx. 35 minutes by regional train from Ber­lin-Lichten­berg) and main­tains addi­tional research sta­tions in Dede­low and Pau­lin­enaue (Branden­burg).

PhD-Stu­dent (m/f/d)

As part of the EU-fun­ded research pro­ject SWITCH, a food­shed model is to be set up for regions in Europe. For this task, we are look­ing for a can­did­ate to start, sub­ject to fund­ing, on 01.03.2023 for 42 months at our loc­a­tion in Müncheberg.

Working field:

  • map­ping crop­ping sys­tems in dif­fer­ent regions of Europe by means of remote sens­ing
  • sim­u­la­tion of cli­mate change and man­age­ment scen­arios using a mech­an­istic agro-eco­sys­tem model
  • integ­rat­ing sim­u­lated yields and other eco­sys­tem ser­vices as well as socio-eco­nomic data in a food­shed model


  • stud­ies in geosciences or agri­cul­tural sci­ences
  • exper­i­ence with stat­ist­ics and geo-inform­a­tion sys­tems
  • pro­gram­ming exper­i­ence in Python or R
  • interest in the inter­ac­tion of bio­phys­ical and socio-eco­nomic pro­cesses in the con­text of the agri-food sys­tem
  • very good com­mand of Eng­lish (writ­ten and spoken)
