RWTH Aachen - Chair of Botany and Molcular Genetics

The Chair of Botany and Molecular Genetics, headed by Prof. Björn Usadel (, is part of the Institute of Biology 1 in the Faculty of Mathematics, Computer Science and Natural Sciences of the RWTH Aachen. The research focus of the group includes genetic analysis and utilization of plant cell walls, regulation of plant metabolism and the signaling pathways involved, as well as bioinformatics. In the field of omics research, we are leading in development and evaluation of plant genome data by sequencing through nanopores - a unique and revolutionary technology that allows real-time data acquisition and data analysis of nucleic acids while interacting directly with a protein-based nanopore. Our project portfolio includes basic research as well as applied and interdisciplinary research projects.

Research Assistant/Associate

Working field:

  • Advancements of Next Generation Sequencing technologies and data analysis
  • Participation in molecular biology projects
  • Communication with and travelling to collaboration partners (e.g. Chile)
  • Participation in teaching and administration of the institute
  • Writing scientific publications and project proposals

You have a university degree (MSc or equivalent) in biology, biochemistry or biotechnology and completed your PhD in a biological subject with above-average success. You have a good knowledge of molecular biology and respective techniques. Experience with Next Generation Sequencing technologies is beneficial, and an interest in the development of advanced molecular biology techniques and bioinformatic data analysis is required. A great deal of self-initiative and teamwork, as well as the ability to work independently, self-organized and goal-oriented is expected. You should have a good knowledge of English (spoken and written) and a basic knowledge of German is a plus. In addition, ideally, you are very interested in collaborative projects and you are also willing to travel abroad. Experience in supervision and guidance of students is an advantage as you will be involved in teaching.

What we offer:

The position is until 31.03.2020 and is to be filled as soon as possible. This is a full-time position.

The salary corresponds to level EG 13 TV-L.

RWTH Aachen University is certified as a "Family-Friendly University". We particularly welcome and encourage applications from women, disabled persons and ethnic minority groups, recognizing they are underrepresented across RWTH Aachen University. The principles of fair and open competition apply and appointments will be made on merit.
