The WZB Ber­lin Social Sci­ence Cen­ter con­ducts basic research with a focus on prob­lems of mod­ern soci­et­ies in a glob­al­ized world. The research is the­ory-based, prob­lem-ori­ented, often long-term and mostly based on inter­na­tional com­par­is­ons.

Two Stu­dent Assist­ants (f/m/x)

Work­ing field:

The WZB Ber­lin Social Sci­ence Cen­ter, research area Inter­na­tional Polit­ics and Law, research unit Global Gov­ernance (Dir­ector: Prof. Dr. Michael Zürn), seeks

two Stu­dent Assist­ants (f/m/x)

for the fol­low­ing pos­i­tions:

1. Assist­ance for the unit’s dir­ector

to be employed for a period of 12 months, start­ing on 1st Octo­ber 2020, with the pos­sib­il­ity of exten­sion and a weekly work­ing load of 10 to 15 hours

Respons­ib­il­it­ies:

  • Sup­port­ing the dir­ector with tasks such as research and review of lit­er­at­ure, data col­lec­tion and pre­par­a­tion, edit­or­ial work on manuscripts

2. Assist­ance for the unit’s research­ers

to be employed for a period of 12 months, start­ing on 1st Octo­ber 2020, with the pos­sib­il­ity of exten­sion and a weekly work­ing load of 19 hours

Respons­ib­il­it­ies:

  • Act­ively sup­port­ing the research­ers with their sci­entific work – espe­cially in the areas of politi­ciz­a­tion, ref­er­en­dums, and issues of sov­er­eignty – with tasks includ­ing research and review of lit­er­at­ure; col­lec­tion, pro­cessing, ana­lysis, and visu­al­iz­a­tion of data; edit­or­ial work on and dis­cus­sion of sci­entific manuscripts, blog posts, and other pub­lic­a­tions

Require­ments:

For pos­i­tion 1:

  • Bach­elor’s or Mas­ter’s stu­dent in Inter­na­tional Rela­tions, Polit­ical Sci­ence, Soci­ology, or a related dis­cip­line
  • Very good course achieve­ments
  • Very good com­mand of writ­ten and spoken Eng­lish and Ger­man lan­guages
  • Sound know­ledge of MS Office applic­a­tions
  • Exper­i­ence with and interest in meth­ods of data col­lec­tion, pro­cessing, and man­age­ment (e.g., using Excel, STATA, R, or SPSS)

Desired qual­i­fic­a­tions:

  • Know­ledge of the­or­ies and debates in Inter­na­tional Rela­tions and Com­par­at­ive Polit­ical Sci­ence
  • Know­ledge of quant­it­at­ive and qual­it­at­ive research meth­ods
  • Exper­i­ence with sys­tem­atic text ana­lysis
  • Exper­i­ence with ref­er­ence man­age­ment pro­grammes (e.g., Zotero, Citavi, End­Note)

For pos­i­tion 2:

  • Bach­elor’s or Mas­ter’s stu­dent in Inter­na­tional Rela­tions, Polit­ical Sci­ence, Soci­ology, or a related dis­cip­line
  • Very good course achieve­ments
  • Very good com­mand of writ­ten and spoken Eng­lish and Ger­man lan­guages
  • Sound know­ledge of MS Office applic­a­tions
  • Exper­i­ence with and interest in meth­ods of data col­lec­tion, pro­cessing, man­age­ment, and visu­al­isa­tion (e.g., with Excel, STATA, R, or SPSS)
  • Exper­i­ence with syn­tax-based data ana­lysis and visu­al­isa­tion (e.g., R, STATA, or Python) and interest in com­pu­ta­tional social sci­ence approaches (e.g., web scrap­ing, text ana­lysis, net­work ana­lysis)

Desired qual­i­fic­a­tions:

  • Know­ledge of the­or­ies and debates in inter­na­tional rela­tions and polit­ics
  • Know­ledge of quant­it­at­ive and qual­it­at­ive research meth­ods
  • Exper­i­ence with ref­er­ence man­age­ment soft­ware (e.g., Zotero, Citavi, End­Note)

What we of­fer:

TV Stud III; cur­rently €12.50 per hour
