Pro­fess­or­ship (W3-S) for “Sci­ence Stud­ies”

in con­junc­tion with a pos­i­tion as Head of Research Area “Research Sys­tem and Sci­ence Dynam­ics” at the Ger­man Centre for Higher Edu­ca­tion Research and Sci­ence Stud­ies (DZHW), Han­over and Ber­lin start­ing as soon as pos­sible.

Work­ing field:

The DZHW is jointly fun­ded by the Ger­man fed­eral and state gov­ern­ments. It was foun­ded in Septem­ber 2013 and cur­rently employs about 300 staff. Its head office is in Han­over, with a branch in Ber­lin.

The research area “Research Sys­tem and Sci­ence Dynam­ics” is cur­rently focus­ing on the ana­lysis of struc­tures and inter­de­pend­en­cies in the research sys­tem. Core research sub­jects include the inter­play of dif­fer­ent forms of gov­ernance, fin­an­cing, fund­ing and pro­duc­tion; eval­u­ation prac­tices, their organ­isa­tion and impact on decision-mak­ing; aca­demic qual­ity and how it can be ensured; and con­di­tions for the pro­duc­tion and dis­sem­in­a­tion of sci­entific know­ledge. One of the research area’s topic fields is the devel­op­ment of bib­li­o­met­ric indic­at­ors and ana­lys­ing how they affect organ­isa­tional decisions and indi­vidual beha­viour.

The appointee will fur­ther develop this research focus, using an inter­dis­cip­lin­ary approach where appro­pri­ate and tak­ing the recom­mend­a­tions of the Ger­man Coun­cil of Sci­ence and Human­it­ies (WR) into account, par­tic­u­larly in rela­tion to the closer inter­weav­ing of higher edu­ca­tion research and sci­ence stud­ies, with a view to devel­op­ing the DZHW into a European com­pet­ence centre with excel­lent research. This also entails set­ting the insti­tute’s own innov­at­ive focal points and strength­en­ing its integ­ra­tion in the inter­na­tional research land­scape, while at the same time intensi­fy­ing ties between Ber­lin and Han­over.

The appointee will carry out their research at the DZHW. Duties of the Area Head at DZHW include the super­vi­sion of sci­entific work and stra­tegic plan­ning for the research area “Research Sys­tems and Sci­ence Dynam­ics”, with its cur­rent staff of approx. 40. In addi­tion to expert­ise in their dis­cip­line, the appointee will have exper­i­ence in lead­ing a depart­ment of sim­ilar size and in the pro­cure­ment and man­age­ment of research pro­jects.

The appointee will rep­res­ent the field of Sci­ence Stud­ies at Hum­boldt-Uni­versität zu Ber­lin in research and teach­ing, includ­ing a teach­ing oblig­a­tion of two hours per semester week. His/her duties will include col­lab­or­at­ing on related study pro­grammes and cooper­at­ing with the inter­dis­cip­lin­ary Robert Mer­ton Centre at Hum­boldt-Uni­versität zu Ber­lin.

The appointee
  • has com­pre­hens­ive expert­ise with a thor­ough the­or­et­ical found­a­tion as well as an inter­na­tional repu­ta­tion in sci­ence stud­ies,
  • will act­ively col­lab­or­ate in shap­ing the links between higher edu­ca­tion research and sci­ence stud­ies,
  • is able to apply the wide spec­trum of meth­od­o­lo­gical approaches in sci­ence stud­ies (in par­tic­u­lar, bib­li­o­met­rics and quant­it­at­ive sur­vey research, as well as qual­it­at­ive research approaches).

The applic­ant’s pub­lic­a­tions in renowned inter­na­tional journ­als and rel­ev­ant research should demon­strate these abil­it­ies and skills. We are look­ing for someone with an inter­na­tional repu­ta­tion (also meas­ur­able in bib­li­o­met­ric terms), who is act­ively involved in inter­na­tional col­lab­or­a­tion and has exper­i­ence in work­ing abroad. Exper­i­ence in the man­age­ment and acquis­i­tion of third party fun­ded pro­jects, par­tic­u­larly inter­dis­cip­lin­ary pro­jects and pro­jects closely related to prac­tice, are also required. Exper­i­ence in policy sup­port and prac­tical con­sulta­tion are desir­able.

We are look­ing for a dynamic, inclus­ive per­son­al­ity, with strengths in team­work, excel­lent lead­er­ship qual­it­ies, a cooper­at­ive work style and good com­mu­nic­a­tion skills, who will main­tain a high level of pres­ence at DZHW both in Ber­lin and Han­over, and who will con­trib­ute to the ongo­ing integ­ra­tion of the two loc­a­tions.

The appoint­ment is for a per­man­ent employ­ment pos­i­tion, prefer­ably with civil ser­vice status, on the basis of a cooper­a­tion agree­ment. The appointee will be given aca­demic leave of absence by Hum­boldt-Uni­versität zu Ber­lin to per­form his/her duties as head of the research area “Research Sys­tem and Sci­ence Dynam­ics” at the Ger­man Centre for Higher Edu­ca­tion Research and Sci­ence Stud­ies (DZHW) (appoint­ment pro­ced­ure in accord­ance with the leave of absence model).
