Located in the heart of Berlin, Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin is one of Europe's largest and most research-intensive medical universities. The project is embedded in a collaboration between the group of Prof. Markus Ralser (Director of Institute of Biochemistry, Charité University Medicine) and two research groups at the University of Oxford, headed by Prof. Craig MacLean and Dr. Rachel Wheatley. This joint project addresses the role of bacterial-fungal co-infections in the evolution of antimicrobial resistance. This research effort is funded through the Berlin University Alliance and part of the Ox|Ber Oxford/Berlin Research Partnership, Centre for Advanced Studies. We are leaders in microbiology and metabolism research, employing large-scale, ultra-fast proteomics and evolutionary genomics to investigate antimicrobial resistance and tolerance mechanisms in bacterial and fungal pathogens.

Working field:

We are looking for a highly enthusiastic doctoral researcher to investigate the role of bacterial-fungal co-infections in the evolution of antimicrobial resistance (AMR), with particular focus on the multi-drug resistant bacterium Pseudomonas aeruginosa (PA) and the opportunistic fungal pathogen Candida albicans (CA). This position will be formally based at the Charité in Berlin, but part of the project will be conducted at the University of Oxford.

Your main tasks will be:
  • Adapting existing and developing improved experimental protocols for the high-throughput analysis of AMR in a CA-PA co-infection model
  • Determining the underlying mechanisms that alter stress tolerance in a CA-PA co-infection model;
  • Performing Adaptive Laboratory Evolution (ALE) and high-throughput proteomics experiments to monitor the emergence of tolerance and resistance in CA-PA communities;

  • Master’s degree in natural sciences (Biological Sciences, Microbiology, Biochemistry, Systems Biology, Molecular Biology, Bioinformatics/Computational Biology, or related fields)
  • Experience of designing and running experiments with microbial cultures (bacteria and/or fungi) in the laboratory
  • Hands-on experience with key biochemical and molecular biological methods
  • Motivation to work in an international research environment
Highly desirable:
  • Experience with and/or motivation to learn systems biology approaches, high-throughput methodologies,
  • Experience with and/or motivation to learn analytical and omics methods (LC-MS, NGS)
  • Basic ability to analyse data in R or Python
  • Good communication skills
Any of the following will be a plus:
  • Proficiency in data analysis using R
  • Interest in multispecies communities, host-pathogen interactions, or related topics
