The Department of Pediatric Respiratory Medicine, Immunology and Critical Care Medicine (Director Prof. Marcus A. Mall) is a maximum care center for children and adolescents with acute and chronic diseases of the respiratory tract, immunological disorders and critical illness. The department includes one of the largest Cystic Fibrosis Centers in Europe where clinicians and scientists work together with the aim to better understand the disease mechanisms underlying cystic fibrosis and other rare genetic lung diseases and to use this knowledge to improve prevention, diagnostics and therapy. In light of emerging molecular therapies targeting the underlying cause of disease, we seek to establish an Independent Junior Research Group in the field of Precision Medicine of Cystic Fibrosis and invite applications for the position commencing as soon as possible.

Junior Research Group Leader in Precision Medicine of Cystic Fibrosis

Working field:

We offer an international, innovative and highly collaborative research environment with access to large patient cohorts and the unique biomedical research infrastructure at Charité. As group leader of the Junior Research Group in the Department of Pediatric Respiratory Medicine, Immunology and Critical Care Medicine, the successful candidate has the opportunity to establish and conduct independent research, obtain extramural funding, and actively engage in collaborative research programs including the German Center for Lung Research (DZL), the German Center for Child and Adolescent Health (DZKJ) and the Collaborative Research Center 1449 Dynamic Hydrogels at Biointerfaces. The position provides a starting package for research with yearly personnel and running costs, and includes mentoring. The initial appointment is for 5 years with a possible extension. Part time clinical work is possible in the framework of a translational research concept.


The Junior Research Group Leader position is intended for a research-oriented clinician scientist using cutting-edge approaches to implement and advance precision medicine of cystic fibrosis. The successful candidate is expected to have extensive experience with CFTR-directed therapeutics, biomarkers of CFTR function and phenotyping of lung disease required for the assessment of precision medicine strategies for patients with cystic fibrosis.

Applicants are required to hold a doctoral degree (M.D. or Ph.D.) in medicine, the life sciences, or related areas and have an excellent track record demonstrating the translational relevance of their research. In addition, applicants should have work experience in international as well as interdisciplinary research teams and demonstrate excellent communication skills and leadership potential. Board certification in pediatrics and experience in clinical care of patients with cystic fibrosis are desirable.
