TIB, being part of the Leibniz Research Association, is with around 600 employees one of the largest technical information centres in Germany, having three main functions:
1. Acting in the capacity of the Leibniz Information Centre for Science and Technology, our forward-looking services secure the infrastructural requirements for providing researchers in science and industry with high-quality information and literature.
2. Carrying out cutting edge research to further expand TIB’s role as a German information centre for the digitisation of science and technology.
3. Offer library services for the Leibniz University Hannover.
Working field:
Your challenge
The PhD topics will be in the context of the Open Research Knowledge Graph (
https://www.orkg.org) and the project “SCINEXT - Neural-Symbolic Scholarly Innovation Extraction”, funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF). The aim of these projects is to research and develop techniques for crowdsourcing, representing and managing semantically structured, rich representations of scholarly contributions and research data in knowledge graphs and thus develop a novel model for scholarly communication. In the context of the PhD thesis you will be responsible for conducting independent and original scientific research involving corpus development and annotation in organizing research contributions in the ORKG in a structured, semantic way, so other researchers can get a quick overview on the state-of-the-art in the field. You will participate in local, national and international collaboration activities. Given the multidisciplinary nature of the programme, we encourage applicants with a strong curiosity and interest in Science to apply.

Your qualities
Your competence area should be in computational linguistics or related fields. You should be able to think creatively, to design and develop corpus annotation guidelines and the corpus itself for natural language processing; as well as be interested in comprehending research problems in a multidisciplinary setting. You should possess some experience or awareness in the semantic organisation of knowledge with thesauri, ontologies, knowledge graphs and have a high affinity to digital services. You will be responsible for developing corpus resources involving structured fine-grained knowledge about scholarly innovations across at least five different scientific fields for the TIB ORKG stakeholders in Science and Technology. Therefore, you should have good communication skills, a high degree of research community user orientation, commitment, initiative, ability to work in a team and creativity.

Research Associate/PhD Candidate “Computer Science: Computational Linguistics & Corpus Annotation” (m/f/d)
to work in the Data Science & Digital Libraries Research Group (Prof. Dr. Sören Auer) at the next possible date.
The position is initially limited to three years with envisioned extension. The regular weekly working time is 39.8 hours (full-time). The position is suitable for part-time work only to a limited extend. The remuneration is based on pay scale group 13 TV-L.
