Your chal­lenge
The PhD top­ics will be in the con­text of the Open Research Know­ledge Graph (https://www.orkg.org) and the pro­ject “SCINEXT - Neural-Sym­bolic Schol­arly Innov­a­tion Extrac­tion”, fun­ded by the Fed­eral Min­istry of Edu­ca­tion and Research (BMBF). The aim of these pro­jects is to research and develop tech­niques for crowd­sourcing, rep­res­ent­ing and man­aging semantic­ally struc­tured, rich rep­res­ent­a­tions of schol­arly con­tri­bu­tions and research data in know­ledge graphs and thus develop a novel model for schol­arly com­mu­nic­a­tion. In the con­text of the PhD thesis you will be respons­ible for con­duct­ing inde­pend­ent and ori­ginal sci­entific research involving cor­pus devel­op­ment and annota­tion in organ­iz­ing research con­tri­bu­tions in the ORKG in a struc­tured, semantic way, so other research­ers can get a quick over­view on the state-of-the-art in the field. You will par­ti­cip­ate in local, national and inter­na­tional col­lab­or­a­tion activ­it­ies. Given the mul­tidiscip­lin­ary nature of the pro­gramme, we encour­age applic­ants with a strong curi­os­ity and interest in Sci­ence to apply.

Your tasks will focus on

• Col­lab­or­at­ing with research­ers from dif­fer­ent dis­cip­lines to gain famili­ar­ity with research prob­lems and their con­tri­bu­tion descrip­tions expressed in schol­arly lit­er­at­ure.
• Con­cep­tu­ally design­ing, mod­el­ling and imple­ment­ing onto­logy-based know­ledge rep­res­ent­a­tions for crowd­sourcing of the Open Research Know­ledge Graph.
• Annota­tion and cur­a­tion of mul­tidiscip­lin­ary schol­arly con­tri­bu­tion descrip­tions.

Your qual­it­ies
Your com­pet­ence area should be in com­pu­ta­tional lin­guist­ics or related fields. You should be able to think cre­at­ively, to design and develop cor­pus annota­tion guidelines and the cor­pus itself for nat­ural lan­guage pro­cessing; as well as be inter­ested in com­pre­hend­ing research prob­lems in a mul­tidiscip­lin­ary set­ting. You should pos­sess some exper­i­ence or aware­ness in the semantic organ­isa­tion of know­ledge with thesauri, onto­lo­gies, know­ledge graphs and have a high affin­ity to digital ser­vices. You will be respons­ible for devel­op­ing cor­pus resources involving struc­tured fine-grained know­ledge about schol­arly innov­a­tions across at least five dif­fer­ent sci­entific fields for the TIB ORKG stake­hold­ers in Sci­ence and Tech­no­logy. There­fore, you should have good com­mu­nic­a­tion skills, a high degree of research com­munity user ori­ent­a­tion, com­mit­ment, ini­ti­at­ive, abil­ity to work in a team and cre­ativ­ity.

Require­ments

• Suc­cess­fully com­pleted uni­versity degree (Mas­ter’s degree or com­par­able) in a rel­ev­ant field of study such as Lin­guist­ics, Com­pu­ta­tional Lin­guist­ics or a com­par­able course.
• You have basic know­ledge of annota­tion tools, pro­gram­ming (prefer­ably Python) and ideally have some exper­i­ence with ver­sion con­trol pro­grams (Git).
• You have fairly good lin­guistic know­ledge, espe­cially in semantics, syn­tax and prag­mat­ics as well as nat­ural lan­guage pro­cessing.
• You have already inde­pend­ently organ­ized and com­pleted your own pro­jects regard­ing cor­pus annota­tion guidelines devel­op­ment, annota­tion, and qual­ity eval­u­ation.
• The inter­face of lin­guist­ics and com­puter sci­ence is an excit­ing area for you.
• Interest in digital lib­rar­ies, research data man­age­ment, curi­os­ity about mul­tidiscip­lin­ary schol­arly com­mu­nic­a­tion (e.g., Social Sci­ences, Astro­nomy, Math­em­at­ics, Vir­o­logy and Mater­i­als Sci­ence) as applic­a­tion domains and a pas­sion for mas­ter­ing and apply­ing semantic tech­no­lo­gies.
• You are inter­ested in famil­i­ar­iz­ing your­self with new top­ics and pro­jects.
• Pro­fi­ciency in spoken and writ­ten Eng­lish and excel­lent com­mu­nic­a­tion skills. Pro­fi­ciency in Ger­man is a plus.

Desir­able addi­tions to your pro­file

• Exper­i­ence with how lin­guistic know­ledge can be deployed to improve the per­form­ance of NLP sys­tems and with how com­pu­ta­tional meth­ods can serve the pur­poses of lin­guistic ana­lysis.
• Exper­i­ence with lan­guage mod­els includ­ing semantic embed­dings and/or know­ledge graphs in NLP applic­a­tions.
• Basic under­stand­ing of data struc­tures, algorithms, and their com­plex­it­ies.
• Pub­lic­a­tions in reput­able Com­pu­ta­tional Lin­guist­ics/NLP ven­ues.

The pos­i­tion is ini­tially lim­ited to three years with envi­sioned exten­sion. The reg­u­lar weekly work­ing time is 39.8 hours (full-time). The pos­i­tion is suit­able for part-time work only to a lim­ited extend. The remu­ner­a­tion is based on pay scale group 13 TV-L.
