Research Associate (m/f/d) Bioinformatics

Working field:

The viral epidemiology group (headed by Prof. Drexler) at the Institute of Virology (Director Prof. Drosten) at the Charité Campus Mitte conducts research on evolutionary, diagnostic and epidemiological aspects of virology, with a focus on tropical regions of Latin America and Africa. To strengthen our team, we are looking for a research assistant to provide bioinformatic support for a project partially funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG) on the evolutionary-biological risk assessment of coronaviruses, etc. and the discovery of novel viruses. We offer versatile, exciting activities in a committed, friendly and international team in which initiative, collegiality and a sense of responsibility are valued.

  • Establishment of a bioinformatics workflow for cluster-based analysis of viral genome sequences
  • Development of new and application of existing algorithms and pipelines for the analysis of metagenomic data
  • Identification and description of pathogens and quasispecies
  • Evaluation and scripting of complex transcriptomic datasets of SARS-related bat coronaviruses
  • Statistical analysis, Generalised Linear Models, Principal Component Analysis
  • phylogenetic analyses
  • metabolome analyses
Scientific staff is given sufficient time to carry out their own scientific work in accordance with their employment relationship.


  • University degree in bioinformatics / computer science / statistics or related fields.
  • Experience working with high-throughput sequencing data analyses
  • Experience in working with Unix/Linux environments
  • Good knowledge of various programming languages (e.g. Python, R, Perl, Java, C++)
  • Experience with workflow management systems (Snakemake, Nextflow)
  • Flexibility, commitment and ability to work in a team
  • High level of professional interest and commitment
