The Berlin Institute for the Foundations of Learning and Data (BIFOLD) at TU Berlin is looking for a research assistant for the research group under the direction of Prof. Klaus-Robert Müller.

Working field:

Research at the intersection of deep learning and explainable machine learning, as well as histopathology or quantum chemistry; characterization und modelling of domain-informed deep neural networks; analysis of domain-specific deep neural networks with explainable machine learning; development of methods to identify learned concepts of (transformer-based) deep neural networks; post-hoc correction of deep neural networks; knowledge extraction from domain-specific deep neural networks; software implementation of machine learning methods; teaching duties.


  • Successfully completed university degree (Master, Diplom or equivalent) in Computer Science, Physics, Engineering or Applied Mathematics
  • Profound knowledge especially in deep learning and explainable machine learning, as well as applications in the medical domain (histopathology, oncology) or in quantum chemistry
  • Practical experience in the development and application of machine learning algorithms, as well as parallel computing on GPUs.
  • Solid programming skills, especially experience with ML and autodifferentiation packages (JAX, PyTorch, SciML) and linear algebra libraries (Julia, Numpy, BLAS etc.)
  • Excellent communication skills in German and English
  • Practical experience in the fields of histopathology or quantum chemistry is an advantage
  • The ability to teach in German and/or in English is required; willingness to acquire the respective missing language skills
