Chair (W2) of Applied Optimization

At the Faculty of Mathematics, the Institute of Numerical Mathematics, invites applications for the
Chair (W2) of Applied Optimization
as of October 1, 2026.

Working field:

You (m/f/x) represent an application-oriented topic in the field of optimization in both research and teaching. Possible areas of your research focus include "Discrete Optimization", "Operations Research", "Optimization Methods for Machine Learning or Data Science", "Optimal Control", "Optimal Transport", or "Optimization under Uncertainty". Your expertise should complement the existing strengths of the Faculty of Mathematics and of TUD. As part of our team, you will teach in mathematical degree programs and supervise theses and projects, particularly in the field of discrete optimization, and you will also take on export courses for other science and engineering programs. You contribute significantly to the development of relevant research topics through publications and the acquisition of third-party funding. Moreover, you work across disciplinary boundaries and are happy to cooperate with partners from outside the field of mathematics. The DRESDEN-concept research alliance provides excellent opportunities for such collaborations. TUD offers a dynamic and innovative workplace where you can play a pivotal role in inspiring and shaping the next generation of mathematicians. We look forward to working with you on enhancing our faculty’s research and teaching profile, as well as in strengthening the practical relevance of our degree programs. Additionally, we invite you to take an active role in academic self-administration.

Requirements:

We are looking for an internationally renowned expert in a relevant and application-oriented field of optimization. The successful candidate holds a habilitation or equivalent qualification in mathematics or a closely related discipline. You demonstrate your distinction through excellent research and high-quality publications, through your ability to obtain third-party funded projects, and your experience in international-level research. In addition, we expect broad experience in university teaching, ideally proven by positive teaching evaluations. Experience outside German science and academia, expertise in science communication, familiarity with academic management tasks, leadership and team management skills, as well as skills in diversity are also highly welcome. The requirements for appointment, the official tasks and the administrative status are governed by §§ 59, 69, 71 of the Institutions of Higher Education Act in the Free State of Saxony (SächsHSG) and the Regulations on Duties and Responsibilities of Institutes of Higher Education (HSDAVO).
