Das Fraun­ho­fer-Insti­tut für Inte­grierte Schal­tun­gen IIS in Erlan­gen ist eine welt­weit füh­rende anwen­dungs­ori­en­tierte For­schungs­ein­rich­tung für mikro­elek­tro­ni­sche und infor­ma­ti­ons­tech­ni­sche Sys­tem­lö­sun­gen und Dienst­leis­tun­gen. Research Asso­ci­ate in X-ray tech­no­logy

Are you inter­ested in work­ing in a young and inter­dis­cip­lin­ary team with inter­na­tional pro­jects at the inter­face between industry and research?

Then we have just the job for you!

Work­ing field:

You will be respons­ible for the »recon­struc­tion of volu­met­ric images« sub­pro­ject within the pub­licly fun­ded »BM18« pro­ject. BM18 is a new (X-ray) beam­line that is being con­struc­ted at the European Syn­chro­tron ESRF in Gren­oble, France, in col­lab­or­a­tion with Fraunhofer IIS. The beam­line will be oper­ated jointly with the ESRF with the aim of becom­ing the world’s highest stand­ard for indus­trial com­puted tomo­graphy (CT). Build­ing on many years of pre­lim­in­ary work, you will develop highly optim­ized algorithms for the recon­struc­tion of large-scale volu­met­ric images (2–10 TB/scan). You will work close to the inter­faces with the meas­ur­ing sys­tem (detector) and the mass memory of the ESRF.

You will be in act­ive con­tact with col­leagues in France (ESRF) and Fürth (EZRT, detector devel­op­ment), meet­ing for joint pitches and main­tain­ing a reg­u­lar report­ing sys­tem. As part of the pro­ject, you will work closely with PhD stu­dents at the Chair of X-ray Micro­scopy (LRM) at Julius-Max­imili­ans-Uni­versität in Würzburg and at the Chair of Math­em­at­ics/Image Pro­cessing at the Uni­versity of Pas­sau, where work on rel­ev­ant sub­pro­jects is under­way.


  • A uni­versity degree (in engin­eer­ing or sci­ence) and a will­ing­ness to travel and take part in inter­na­tional col­lab­or­a­tions
  • Sound know­ledge of pro­gram­ming / image pro­cessing, in par­tic­u­lar the abil­ity to work with C, Python and OpenCL, and the abil­ity to struc­ture top­ics clearly, present them in a com­pre­hens­ive fash­ion and imple­ment them effect­ively
  • Excel­lent Ger­man and Eng­lish (or French), know­ledge in X-ray ima­ging, espe­cially com­puted tomo­graphy
  • Ideally, you will have exper­i­ence in soft­ware devel­op­ment for sci­entific research and with agile devel­op­ment teams

About us
The X-ray ima­ging group devel­ops algorithms and meth­ods for X-ray ima­ging as well as devices, primar­ily CT scan­ners, for the char­ac­ter­iz­a­tion of mater­i­als using phase con­trast, scat­ter­ing and X-ray micro­scopy.

The pos­i­tion is ini­tially lim­ited to two years. Appoint­ment, remu­ner­a­tion and social secur­ity bene­fits based on the pub­lic-sec­tor col­lect­ive wage agree­ment (TVöD).
