TMG Rese­arch gGmbH is cur­rently look­ing for an Intern (f/m/x) to sup­port TMG Rese­arch’s new work app­lied rese­arch pro­gramme on urban and peri-urban agri­cul­ture (UPA). The pro­gramme is a response to the impact of the Covid-19 pan­demic on urban and peri-urban food sys­tems. Phys­ical dis­tan­cing meas­ures hit the infor­mal sec­tor par­tic­u­larly hard, food access has become a tre­mend­ous chal­lenge for many poor house­holds. Cur­rent invest­ments to meli­or­ate the impact of the pan­demic offer the oppor­tun­ity to also use them to make urban and peri-urban food sys­tems more sus­tain­able and inclus­ive. Work on exter­nal risks includ­ing a focus on locusts will add to the pro­ject´s work on resi­li­ence.

This pro­ject is fin­anced by the Ger­man Fed­eral Min­istry for Eco­nomic Coo­per­a­tion and Devel­op­ment (BMZ).

TMG Rese­arch is a sus­tain­ab­il­ity Think Tank that is based in Ber­lin. Our work pro­gram­mes focus on human rights-based land gov­ern­ance, sus­tain­ab­il­ity trans­form­a­tions of our food sys­tems, and ocean gov­ern­ance. Digit­al­iz­a­tion and sus­tain­ab­il­ity gov­ern­ance are cross-cut­ting the­mes. TMG Rese­arch is a mem­ber of the Think Sus­tain­able Europe net­work of European Sus­tain­ab­il­ity Think Tanks.

Rese­arch Intern (f/m/x)

Work­ing field:

The Pos­i­tion:
We are look­ing for a full-time Intern (f/m/x) to sup­port the dif­fer­ent work streams of the UPA-pro­ject. The can­did­ate would:

  • Sup­port the plan­ning and imple­ment­a­tion of rese­arch activ­it­ies
  • Sup­port the coor­din­a­tion of meet­ings of our natio­nal stake­hol­der groups and the pre­par­a­tion of stake­hol­der work­shops, e.g. plan meet­ings, sup­port feed­back pro­ces­ses, pro­vide tech­nical back-stop­ping
  • Sup­port the writ­ing pro­ces­ses for blogs, and short pos­i­tion­ing pie­ces, e.g. back­ground rese­arch, co-writ­ing with natio­nal act­ors
  • Sup­port the doc­u­ment­a­tion and report­ing of the UPA-pro­ject and other TMG’s activ­it­ies.
  • Sup­port fur­ther out­reach activ­it­ies (social media, web­site, etc.)

Require­ments:

  • Mas­ter’s degree or post-gradu­ate stu­dent with a focus on inter­na­tio­nal as well as inter­dis­cip­lin­ary stud­ies, e.g. Devel­op­ment or Urban Stud­ies, Social Anthro­po­logy or rela­ted field in sus­tain­ab­il­ity sci­ence
  • Know­ledge in the areas of sus­tain­able and inclus­ive devel­op­ment, food sys­tems, land man­age­ment/rights, small­hol­der agri­cul­ture, espe­cially in the glo­bal south
  • Know­ledge/exper­i­ence with urban/peri-urban agri­cul­ture and respect­ive busi­ness mod­els and tech­no­lo­gies would be a strong asset
  • Strong ana­lyt­ical skill
  • Excel­lent writ­ing and com­mu­nic­a­tion skills in Eng­lish
  • Good work­ing know­ledge of French is a con­sid­er­able advant­age
  • Exper­i­ence (work­ing) in Sub-Saha­ran Africa, or with Afri­can part­ners would be a fur­ther advant­age

  • Work­ing in an app­lied rese­arch organ­isa­tion with a truly inter­na­tio­nal work pro­gramme and the aspir­a­tion to enable sus­tain­ab­il­ity trans­form­a­tions, with impact both on the ground as well as on policy level
  • The oppor­tun­ity to con­trib­ute to the devel­op­ment of activ­it­ies aim­ing to make busi­ness mod­els in UPA work for mar­gin­al­ised and vul­ner­able pop­u­la­tions and sup­port an enab­ling envir­on­ment for novel tracks of sus­tain­able trans­form­a­tion
  • Flex­ible work­ing hours

How to ap­ply:

This pos­i­tion is to be fil­led as soon as pos­sible and will have a dur­a­tion of six mon­ths with a view to exten­sion, with a work­ing week of 39 hours. It will be remu­ner­ated accord­ing to the most recent min­imum wage legis­la­tion.
