The Fraunhofer Institute for Open Communication Systems (FOKUS) is located in Berlin-Charlottenburg and offers R&D services for the development of seamless, personalisable communication systems. For our projects in the areas of digital administration, digital government and public IT, we are looking for team-oriented researchers (m/w/d) who want to progress the digitalization and modernization of governments and public administrations. Researcher (m/w/d) for the development of innovative web applications for data management in an agile enviroment
We are an interdisciplinary team, helping governments and public administrations to solve some of their biggest challenges in IT and data. You can expect to work on projects that are practically relevant for our clients, address often publicly debated policy issues and add value to society at large. As a team, we offer you a professional and collaborative research environment where you can bring in your own research ideas and set your own priorities. We work in an agile framework, allowing us to reconcile the delivery of client projects with flexible working hours.
Contributing to and managing individual tasks in (sub-)national and international IT research and consulting projects for the digital transformation of governments and public administrations.
Developing technical solutions for data platforms, open data, big data and smart cities.
Supporting the conception and implementation of functional architectures and/or software architectures.
Contributing to the preparation of scientific studies in the subject areas of public IT, smart cities, digital government.
Through our projects, you will also have the opportunity to further expand your skills in one or several of the following topics:
Knowledge in the area of digital government or in the digitalization of public administration
Degree (Master’s or Diploma) in computer science, mathematics, physics, business informatics, administrative informatics, or a related area.
Experience in developing distributed systems in Java.
Ability to communicate and translate technical topics to various audiences, particularly to (internal) developer colleagues, clients, and other non-technical audiences.
Good knowledge of software architecture design methods.
A creative, collaborative self-starter.
Good analytical and conceptual thinking paired with a structured way of getting things done.
Very good knowledge of German and English.
Knowledge in some of the following areas is advantageous, but not mandatory:
MicroServices and their provision via containers.
Container platforms, e.g. OpenShift, AWS.
Open Data, Semantic Web, Linked Data.
Development in Kotlin or Python.
Space for both independent work and creative co-design with colleagues and partners.
An open, collaborative and interdisciplinary team.

The weekly working time is 39 hours.
This is a fixed-term contract with a duration of two years.
