Leibniz-Zentrum für Agrarlandschaftsforschung e.V. - HR

The project HAIRphae (DFG) aims on studying the trade-off between root and mycorrhizal absorptive surface in response to soil nutrient stoichiometry. Plant ecologists have used economic theory to explain plant traits diversity from a resource acquisition point of view. The framework of the Root Economics Space includes the collaboration gradient that describes the plant reliance to symbiosis with mycorrhiza. The “outsourcing” strategy within the collaboration gradient is characterized by high root diameter, low specific root lengths and strong mycorrhizal symbiosis. In contrast, plants following the “do it yourself” strategy exhibit a fine acquisitive root system but also a high root hair incidence and are less mycorrhiza reliant.

This Bachelor/Master project aims to test variation in mycorrhizal hyphae in the soil in response to land-use in managed grasslands. The field-sampling has already been done and a comprehensive sample evaluation has started to which the position advertised here is intended to contribute by measuring extraradical hyphal length.

student assistant for 80h/month (f/m/d)

Combined with the opportunity to conduct a Bachelor/Master's thesis on the acquired data, we are offering a 4 month position starting in July at our location in Paulinenaue as

Working field:

  • conducting laboratory work on dried soils samples to determine mycorrhizal extraradical hyphal length
  • analyzing the variation in relation to plant species and land-use
  • evaluating the results with statistical methods

Requirements:

  • Major in biology, soil, agricultural, or environmental sciences
  • interest in biological and ecological aspects
  • patience with handling microscopic samples
  • perseverance to process a large amount of samples
  • knowledge in the use of statistical software (R)

What we offer:

  • an interdisciplinary working environment that encourages independence and self-reliance
  • a collegial and open-minded working atmosphere in a dynamic research institution
  • a company ticket for public transport
  • the opportunity to conduct a Bachelor/Master thesis studying an aspect of personal choice within the project
  • company ticket
