Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt (PTB)

The art of measurement — made in Germany. Striving to perfect it is the mission of the 2100 employees of PTB, the Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt. As Germany’s national metrology institute and a leading center of research, we operate in an international environment to develop world-class measurement standards. We at PTB work to ensure that people and organizations can trust the measurements they use.

At our Berlin-Adlershof site, we are looking to fill the following position in Department 7.1 (Radiometry with Synchrotron Radiation):

Student (m/f/d) physics

Working field:

The working group 7.14 “EUV Nanometrology” is looking for support in the research and development of new metrological approaches for semiconductor structures. We use various beamlines operated by the PTB at the synchrotron sources BESSYII and MLS in Berlin. In addition to purely experimental work, such as the challenge of implementing high-precision X-ray scattering experiments or EUV reflectometry, the analysis and modeling of the measured data also plays an important role. The range of tasks thus extends from classic laboratory work to data science with a strong emphasis on statistical physics and machine learning. Depending on your skills and interests, you can focus on different areas of activity:

  • Support in the planning and implementation of GISAXS, EUV/VUV reflectometry, VUV ellipsometry, GIXRF, and GEXRF experiments
  • Evaluation and interpretation of measurement data based on modern statistical methods and modeling of light-matter interactions
  • Support in setting up the European database for optical constants (OCDB)

Requirements:

  • Enrollment in a bachelor's or master's degree program in physics
  • Ideally, knowledge of Python
  • Good knowledge of physics and basic knowledge of optics are an advantage
  • Enjoyment of independent scientific work as well as team and project work
  • Strong team and communication skills
  • German (A2 level) and English (B2 level) language skills
