Mas­ter or Diploma The­sis "Electric and Flui­dic Cha­rac­te­riza­t­ion Envi­ron­ment for Microf­lui­dic MEMS-Devices" (IPMS-2018-130)

Work­ing field:

Flow-regu­la­tion and -gene­ra­tion on a micro­me­ter length scale are of high sci­en­ti­fic and indus­trial inte­rest in the ongo­ing trend of sys­tem minia­tu­riza­t­ion. The Fraun­ho­fer IPMS the­r­eby uses a paten­ted class of late­ral elec­tro­sta­tic ben­ding actua­tors to deve­lop a set of sili­con based Micro­pumps and Micro­val­ves devices. The in-house fabri­ca­ted microf­lui­dic MEMS-devices were desi­gned to have the elec­tri­cal con­tacts on the backside and the flui­dic inlet and out­let on the fronts­ide of the chip. In order to effi­ci­ently cha­rac­te­rize the sili­con chips, a sui­ta­ble mea­su­re­ment setup needs to be deve­lo­ped which allows the action on of the flui­dic domain via elec­tri­cal exci­ta­tion of the device.

The star­ting point is the rese­arch of state of the art com­bi­ned electric and flui­dic chip based mea­su­re­ment sys­tems. For a spe­ci­fic device lay­out you will decide of a pro­per elec­tri­cal con­tact method in com­bi­na­tion with a leak-proof inter­face with flui­dic con­nec­tors to the microf­lui­dic mea­su­re­ment bench.

What you bring:

  • Basic know­ledge in the field of micro­sys­tems and elec­tri­cal engi­nee­ring would be an advan­tage
  • Basic know­ledge with 3D Design Soft­ware, i.e. Auto­desk Inven­tor, etc.
  • Basic know­ledge of working in a labo­ra­tory and know­ledge of metro­logy tech­ni­ques
  • Inde­pen­dent, goal-ori­en­ted and struc­tu­red way of working
  • Enjoy­ment of working in an inter­di­sci­pli­nary team
