Das Zuse Insti­tute Ber­lin (ZIB) ist eine außer­uni­ver­si­täre und inter­dis­zi­pli­näre For­schungs­ein­rich­tung des Lan­des Ber­lin für ange­wandte Mathe­ma­tik und Infor­ma­tik. For­schungs­schwer­punkte des ZIB lie­gen bei Hoch­leis­tungs­rech­nen, Model­lie­rung, Simu­la­tion und Opti­mie­rung von Pro­blem­stel­lun­gen sei­ner Part­nern aus For­schung, Wis­sen­schaft und Indus­trie.

The posi­tion offe­red is the posi­tion of the head of a BIFOLD junior rese­arch group at ZIB. BIFOLD is a cross-insti­tu­tio­nal and inter­di­sci­pli­nary com­pe­tence cen­ter where sci­en­tists want to rese­arch and deve­lop new approa­ches in the fields of Big Data, Machine Lear­ning and Arti­fi­cial Intel­li­gence.

Work­ing field:

We are loo­king for a can­di­date with exten­sive expe­ri­ence and inde­pen­dent rese­arch results in the field of machine lear­ning, espe­ci­ally in the area of method deve­lop­ment for app­li­ca­ti­ons in the mate­ri­als or life sci­en­ces. He or she must be able to demons­trate inter­na­tio­nally visi­ble theo­re­ti­cal rese­arch results and app­li­ca­ti­ons to real-world com­plex sys­tems and to build brid­ges to pos­si­ble fields of app­li­ca­tion. He or she has expe­ri­ence in the design, acqui­si­tion and/or imple­men­ta­tion of third-party fun­ded pro­jects.

  • Very dif­fi­cult rese­arch tasks in the whole area descri­bed above, espe­ci­ally with regard to the deve­lop­ment of machine lear­ning methods to com­bine data-dri­ven and model-ori­en­ted approa­ches
  • Estab­lish­ment and manage­ment of an inter­di­sci­pli­nary rese­arch team
  • Acqui­si­tion and imple­men­ta­tion of third-party fun­ded pro­jects
  • Initia­tion and imple­men­ta­tion of app­li­ca­tion pro­jects, espe­ci­ally in the field of mate­ri­als or life sci­en­ces
  • Publi­ca­tion of results in peer-reviewed jour­nals


  • Doc­to­rate in mathe­ma­tics, com­pu­ter sci­ence or rela­ted disci­pli­nes
  • Rele­vant expe­ri­ence in all the above areas
  • Pro­ven expe­ri­ence in the acqui­si­tion and imple­men­ta­tion of pro­jects third-party fun­ded pro­jects
  • App­li­cants are expec­ted to be highly moti­va­ted, crea­tive, inde­pen­dent and open to inter­di­sci­pli­nary coope­ra­tion
  • Very good writ­ten and spo­ken Eng­lish

What we of­fer:

  • an addi­tio­nal pen­sion scheme (VBL),
  • 30 days annual leave, fle­xi­ble working hours (flex­time),
  • pay­ment in accordance with TV-L (Collec­tive Agree­ment for the Public Ser­vice of the federal sta­tes), taking into account the rele­vant pro­fes­sio­nal expe­ri­ence and annual spe­cial pay­ment
  • and the dis­coun­ted use of can­te­ens and the sports pro­gram of Freie Uni­ver­si­tät Ber­lin.

How to ap­ply:

Due to our invol­ve­ment in major regio­nal coope­ra­tive pro­jects, such as the DFG Clus­ter of Excel­lence MATH+, the Ber­lin Mathe­ma­ti­cal School (BMS) or the Ber­lin Insti­tute for the Foun­da­ti­ons of Lear­ning and Data (BIFOLD), we have close ties to uni­ver­si­ties and rese­arch insti­tu­tes in the region.

Alt­hough the posi­tion is released full-time, a part-time agree­ment is also pos­si­ble.

The can­di­da­ture of women is encou­ra­ged. Since women are under­re­p­re­sen­ted in infor­ma­tion tech­no­logy, ZIB is try­ing to increase the pro­por­tion of women in this rese­arch area.
