Postdoc­toral Research Fel­lows (f/m/x)


Work­ing field:

The Wis­senschaft­szen­trum Ber­lin für Sozi­alforschung gGmbH (WZB Ber­lin Social Sci­ence Centre), research depart­ment Trans­form­a­tions of Demo­cracy (TD) (Dir­ector: Pro­fessor Daniel Zib­latt), seeks to hire

two Postdoc­toral Research Fel­lows (f/m/x)

for an appoint­ment start­ing as soon as pos­sible (date nego­ti­able) for a dur­a­tion of up to three years (shorter dur­a­tion is pos­sible). The appoint­ment is made at 100% of the reg­u­lar work­ing hours (cur­rently 39 hours/week).

The WZB is a pub­licly fin­anced inter­na­tional social sci­ence insti­tu­tion that con­ducts basic research that is the­ory-based and prob­lem-ori­ented (see ). The new research depart­ment TD focuses on “trans­form­a­tions in demo­cracy”—for­ward move­ments of demo­crat­iz­a­tion, back­ward trends of de-demo­crat­iz­a­tion, and innov­a­tions in demo­cratic insti­tu­tions and prac­tice to cope with the new pres­sures on demo­cracy around the world ( ).


The two postdoc research­ers will con­duct inde­pend­ent research and provide research sup­port to the research depart­ment and work col­lab­or­at­ively with the research team on two dif­fer­ent pro­jects:

Pro­ject A: Inequal­ity, Iden­tity, and Mobil­iz­a­tion of Resent­ment
Pro­ject B: Loc­al­ism and the Polit­ical Geo­graphy of the Rad­ical Right

The Research Fel­lows are expec­ted to closely cooper­ate within their pro­ject as well as with the other mem­bers of the depart­ment and to play a lead­ing role in devel­op­ing the unit’s work­shops and research pro­jects.


Applic­ants are expec­ted to have:
  • com­pleted a Ph.D. in polit­ical sci­ence or a related social sci­ence dis­cip­line
  • a vibrant and cre­at­ive research agenda.
  • know­ledge of, and excel­lent skills in quant­it­at­ive research and quant­it­at­ive meth­ods
  • excel­lent writ­ing and com­mu­nic­a­tion skills in Eng­lish
  • know­ledge of Ger­man lan­guage is use­ful though not required
  • good organ­iz­a­tional skills as well as will­ing­ness and capa­city for team­work.

Salary for the pos­i­tions: EG 14 TVöD Bund
