The Faculty of Life Sciences, Albrecht Daniel Thaer-lnstitute of Agricultural and Horticultural Sciences, together with the Leibniz Centre for Agricultural Landscape Research (ZALF), invites applications for a Junior Professorship (W1 with Tenure Track W2) for ‘Economics of Agricultural Landscapes’ from 1 April 2026.

Junior Professorship (W1 with Tenure Track W2) for ‘Economics of Agricultural Landscapes’

Working field:

The position is expected to carry out solution-oriented research and to offer related teaching on the economics of agriculture with a focus on the joint production of agricultural products and ecosystem services and biodiversity at farm and landscape level. Main research objectives refer to

  1. understanding and integration of the economic value of biodiversity and ecosystem services for the agricultural production system including risk perception of farmers regarding agro-ecological principles,
  2. understanding of the economic value of agricultural related ecosystem services and biodiversity for the society, and
  3. understanding of interactions between innovative agri-environmental and climate policies and management decisions to produce these services.

The research goals are embedded in research on the following topics: economics of ecosystem services and biodiversity, agro-ecological innovation in agricultural production including risk analysis, climate-smart agricultural production, evaluation of policy interventions to improve the joint production of agricultural products and ecosystem services and biodiversity, agri-environmental decisions mainly at farm level, the analysis of changes in demand for environmentally friendly agricultural products and related shifts in preferences, as well as spatially explicit social-ecological landscape modelling regarding suitability for agro-ecological agriculture and for joint production of agricultural and environmental goods.

The professorship is jointly appointed by Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin and the Leibniz Centre for Agricultural Landscape Research in Müncheberg. lt contributes to academic education in the B.Sc. and M.Sc. programs at the Thaer-Institute.

Requirements:

We are seeking an excellent early career researcher who has post-doctoral experience in conducting research on the above topics and academic publishing with international visibility. The successful candidate will have experience with methods such as scenario development, micro-economic modelling, bio-economic modelling, economic valuation methods, econometric analysis, or experimental research. Academic teaching experience, didactic competency, experience in research-based teaching and the willingness to teach in English and German (if necessary after a transitional period to acquire the necessary language skills) are required, as well as the willingness to actively participate in the university's self-administration and the design of cross-departmental research and teaching in areas linked to the professorship. Willingness for continuous improvement of teaching methods and for intensive collaboration within the Thaer-lnstitute, the Faculty of Life Sciences, and across faculty boundaries is expected. Experience in collaborating with non-academic partners in research processes is an advantage.

The offices of the professorship are located on the Berlin Campus Nord of HU, as well as at the ZALF location in Müncheberg.

This is a W2 tenure track position. In order to verify whether the individual performance meets the requirements of a permanent employment, an evaluation process will be opened not later than five years of service. Tenure track professors at the HU Berlin are expected to carry out research and teach, as well as be active on various university committees, in promotion of young scientists and acquire leadership and management skills.
