Technische Universität Berlin - Faculty V - Mechanical Engineering and Transport Systems, Institute of Land and Sea Transport / Department of Autonomous and Energy-Efficient Maritime Technologies

Research Assistant

part-time employment may be possible

About us:

The research activities of the Autonomous and Energy-Efficient Maritime Technologies group focus on multiphase flows within the maritime domain. Key areas of interest include cavitation and ventilation phenomena and free-surface flows, specifically sloshing, and wave-structure-interaction. Methodologically, the department employs both numerical and experimental methods. For experimental research, the department operates several testing facilities. These primarily include the K27 circulation and cavitation tank, the UT2 circulation tank (currently decommissioned), and the deep and shallow water towing tanks. The numerical methods include Navier-Stokes solvers (such as OpenFOAM) coupled with nonlinear equations of motion and solvers for structural dynamics. This spectrum is complemented by boundary element methods, molecular dynamics methods, and data-driven approaches used alongside classical physics-based models.
The position is related to a DFG-funded project focused on the experimental investigation of fundamental mechanisms of ventilation on hydrofoils operating near a free surface.
A basis for the experimental setup has been established, and initial results are already in hand.

Your responsibilities:

  • Optimization and further development of the experimental setup
  • Execution and analysis of experimental investigations
  • Documentation and publication of the results in international peer-reviewed journals

Your profile:

  • Successfully completed university degree (Master, Diplom or equivalent) (Mechanical Engineering or Physics) with a focus on experi-mental fluid mechanics
  • Expertise in experimental fluid mechanics
  • Programming skills in Python and/or C/C++
  • Prior scientific experience is desirable (e.g., experience in conducting systematic scientific research, scientific documentation, and the publication of research results)
  • Good knowledge of German and/or English required; willingness to acquire the respective missing language skills

What we offer:

  • Opportunity for further scientific qualification (e.g., PhD)
  • A diverse range of tasks in a research-intensive, and topical environment
  • An interesting and responsible position with a high degree of autonomy
  • A non-discriminatory work environment characterized by respect and mutual appreciation
  • A pleasant working atmosphere and a wide range of continuing education and professional development opportunities
